Your Child's Watersports Session with Keep Sailing

Your child has an exciting day on the water coming up! Here's everything you need to know.

What to Expect on the Day

Your child will spend their session out on the water learning new skills, working as a team, and having a brilliant time. Sessions are led by our qualified instructors who'll guide the group through fun, hands-on activities suited to their age and ability — no experience needed.

The session typically looks something like this:

  • Welcome and safety briefing on land
  • Kit up with buoyancy aids (provided by us)
  • On-the-water activities with instructor support throughout
  • Wrap up, get changed, and head home with a big smile

Sessions take place in all weather — rain or shine — so please send your child prepared. We'll only cancel if conditions are unsafe, and your group leader will be notified if that happens.

What to Bring

Please make sure your child comes with:

  • Clothes they don't mind getting wet (old t-shirt, shorts, or leggings work well)
  • Trainers or water shoes that can get wet (no flip-flops or bare feet)
  • A full change of dry clothes for afterwards
  • A towel
  • Sun cream (applied before arrival on sunny days)
  • A water bottle
  • A warm layer for afterwards — even in summer, they can feel chilly once out of the water

We do not provide wetsuits (unless its pre-arranged by the group leader), so please dress your child in layers they're happy to get wet in. We provide buoyancy aids for everyone.

Why Watersports Are Great for Young People

There's something special about getting kids out on the water. Sailing and watersports help young people develop in ways that are hard to replicate in a classroom:

  • Confidence — trying something new and realising they can do it
  • Teamwork — working together to get a boat moving or keep a paddleboard steady
  • Resilience — learning that falling in is part of the fun, and getting back up again
  • Focus — reading the wind, balancing, and making quick decisions
  • Connection with nature — switching off from screens and spending time outdoors

Many children who come for a school session discover a hobby they want to keep going. It's a brilliant way to build life skills while having an adventure.

Your Child Is in Safe Hands

We know handing your child over to a new activity can feel like a big deal. Here's why you can feel confident:

  • All our instructors are RYA qualified and hold valid first aid certifications
  • All staff who work with young people are DBS checked
  • We're an RYA recognised training centre
  • We carry full public liability insurance
  • We've taught thousands of young people across our centres
  • Every session has a full risk assessment and safety briefing

Your child doesn't need to be a strong swimmer, but they do need to be comfortable being in and around water. If your child has any medical conditions, allergies, or additional needs, please make sure these have been passed on to your group leader — they're responsible for sharing this information with us before the session.

Loved It? Keep Going!

If your child comes home buzzing and wants to get back on the water, we'd love to see them again! We run youth sailing and paddleboarding courses throughout the year for 7–16 year olds, at 5 locations across Surrey, London, and Berkshire.

No experience needed — we'll take them from complete beginner to confident on the water.
