RYA Youth Stage 1 – Learn to Sail
(Ages 7–16)
Our RYA Youth Stage 1 sailing course is where young sailors start their journey. Designed specifically for beginners, this course introduces children and teenagers to dinghy sailing in a way that feels achievable, structured and fun.
No experience is needed. Just enthusiasm and a willingness to get on the water.
At Keep Sailing, we focus on building confidence first. Skills follow naturally.
Your Stage One Explained
We run Stage 1 courses for two age groups:
- 7–10 years
- 10–16 years
Grouping by age means coaching is delivered at the right pace. Younger sailors build water confidence through games and structured exercises. Older sailors focus more on independence and boat handling. The courses are a mixture of practical and theory sessions.
All participants must be water-confident. All buoyancy aids are provided.
Why Stage 1 Matters
Stage 1 isn’t about perfection. It’s about:
- Feeling comfortable in a sailing boat
- Learning how wind moves the boat
- Beginning to steer with control
- Building independence outdoors
By the end of the course, most sailors are confidently sailing across the wind and ready to progress to RYA Youth Stage 2, where they’ll expand their sailing directions and control.
Course Format
We run RYA Youth Stage 1 courses during:
- School holidays
- Selected weekends
Certification
Sailors who meet the required standard receive the official RYA Youth Stage 1 certificate. Assessment is continuous throughout the course.
Is This the Right Course?
Choose RYA Stage 1 if your child:
- Has never sailed before
- Has only done taster sessions
- Needs a structured introduction to sailing
- Is aged between 7 and 16
If they already sail confidently across the wind and can tack independently, Stage 2 may be more appropriate.
