Last Proper Chance: October Half Term on the Water
Information
The summer kit has finally dried out, the school run is back on, and it's easy to think sailing is done for the year. It isn't. October half term is the last proper chance to get the kids out on the water before winter sets in, and honestly, it's one of our favourite weeks of the whole season.
Why October is better than you'd think
The water is still holding onto some of the summer warmth, the centres are much quieter than August, and those crisp, bright autumn days with a steady breeze are about as good as it gets for learning. Smaller groups mean more time with the instructors.
Don't let the summer skills slip
Here's the thing. Kids learn loads over the summer, then spend months off the water, and by spring a good chunk of it has drifted away. A few days at half term keeps it all fresh. If they did a course with us this summer, it's the perfect chance to finish off a Stage, nail the bits that didn't quite click, or just build a bit more confidence before next season. And if they've never sailed before, it's a relaxed, low-pressure time to give it a go.
Two weeks off in Surrey this year
Worth knowing: most Surrey state schools have moved to a two-week half term this year, from 19 to 30 October. Most London schools are sticking with the usual week, 26 to 30 October. Some academies and faith schools set their own dates, so it's worth double-checking with your school. Whichever week your kids are off, have a look at what's running below.
What's on
We're running RYA Stage 1 to 4 courses and Start Racing over half term. What's on depends on the week and the centre, so check the booking page for full details and dates.
Not sure which one to book? Stage 1 is for complete beginners, and if they did a course with us this summer, they'll usually be ready for the next Stage up. Start Racing is for young sailors who are comfortable on the water, have stage 3 and fancy their first taste of racing.
What to bring
Autumn sailing is brilliant fun as long as everyone stays warm. Pack a wetsuit if you've got one, a fleece or warm layer, a waterproof top, a hat, and old trainers or wetsuit boots. Bring a full change of clothes for afterwards, socks included, plus a water bottle and plenty of snacks. Cold sailors get hungry.
The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October too, so this really is the tail end of the season.
Grab a spot
Half term spaces go quickly, so don't leave it too late. Book using the link above, or drop us a message at info@keepsailing.co.uk if you've got any questions.
See you on the water,
